چکیده

A two-dimensional shadow may encompass more information than its corresponding three-dimensional object. If we rotate the object, we achieve a pool of observed shadows from different angulations, gradients, shapes and variable length contours that make it possible for us to increase our available information. Starting from this simple observation, we show how informational entropies might turn out to be useful in the evaluation of scale-free dynamics in the brain. Indeed, brain activity exhibits a scale-free distribution, which appears as a straight line when plotted in a log power versus log frequency plot. A variation in the scale-free exponent and in the line scaling slope may occur during different functional neurophysiological states. Here we show that modifications in scaling slope are associated with variations in Rényi entropy, a generalization of Shannon informational entropy. From a three-dimensional object’s perspective, by changing its orientation (standing for the cortical scale-free exponent), we detect different two-dimensional shadows from different perception angles (standing for Rènyi entropy in different brain areas). We perform simulations showing how, starting from known values of Rènyi entropy (easily detectable in brain fMRIs or EEG traces), it is feasible to calculate the scaling slope in a given moment and a given brain area. Because changes in scale-free cortical dynamics modify brain activity, suggests the possibility of novel insights in mind reading and description of the forces required for transcranial stimulation.

Cortical burst dynamics predict clinical outcome early in extremely preterm infants.

Intermittent bursts of electrical activity are a ubiquitous signature of very early brain activity. Previous studies have largely focused on assessing the amplitudes of these transient cortical bursts or the intervals between them. Recent advances in basic neuroscience have identified the presence of scale-free 'avalanche' processes in bursting patterns of cortical activity in other clinical co...

Spatiotemporal imaging of complexity

What are the functional neuroimaging measurements required for more fully characterizing the events and locations of neocortical activity? A prime assumption has been that modulation of cortical activity will inevitably be reflected in changes in energy utilization (for the most part) changes of glucose and oxygen consumption. Are such a measures complete and sufficient? More direct measures of...

Influences of Small-Scale Effect and Boundary Conditions on the Free Vibration of Nano-Plates: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation

This paper addresses the influence of boundary conditions and small-scale effect on the free vibration of nano-plates using molecular dynamics (MD) and nonlocal elasticity theory. Based on the MD simulations, Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS) is used to obtain fundamental frequencies of single layered graphene sheets (SLGSs) which modeled in this paper as the mo...

Identifying changes in EEG information transfer during drowsy driving by transfer entropy

Drowsy driving is a major cause of automobile accidents. Previous studies used neuroimaging based approaches such as analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) activities to understand the brain dynamics of different cortical regions during drowsy driving. However, the coupling between brain regions responding to this vigilance change is still unclear. To have a comprehensive understanding of neura...

A Characterization of the Entropy--Gibbs Transformations

Let h be a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space, b(h)+ be the set of all positive semi-definite operators on h and Phi is a (not necessarily linear) unital map of B(H) + preserving the Entropy-Gibbs transformation. Then there exists either a unitary or an anti-unitary operator U on H such that Phi(A) = UAU* for any B(H) +. Thermodynamics, a branch of physics that is concerned with the study...
